Veterans Day is often misunderstood, especially for those that live outside of the US or come from a younger generation. So to help those understand and to help observe Veterans Day, we’ve put together a couple of reasons to keep in mind and also why you should celebrate this national holiday with your friends, family, or local community.
Why Do We Observe Veterans’ Day?
Veterans Day is all about remembering the men and women that fought in combat for America since World War I. It’s dedicated to all American veterans, both those in the past and ones that are still fighting on the frontlines today. It’s to celebrate their service to the country in helping to protect the peace and prosperity of the country.
It’s not Memorial Day
It can often be confused with Memorial Day which is for honoring America’s military fallen. Veterans Day is dedicated to both living and past soldiers that have or are still serving honorably for the country’s armed forces.
Why do we celebrate Veterans’ Day on November 11?
Historically, Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day and was at first celebrated to mark the end of the first World War in 1918. Veterans Day falls on November 11 annually. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918. It became a legal holiday in 1938 and after the Korean War and World War II, Armistice Day was then known as Veterans.
Not just a federal holiday
For many people in America, Veterans Day is just another holiday in the United States. However, it’s also an important holiday that should be celebrated by everyone in the country. Wreath-laying ceremonies are held, parades are also held, and educational institutions observe the holiday in recognition of Veterans Day.
Veterans Day facts include that it is even celebrated in other countries such as Canada where it’s also known as “Poppy Day”. People wear red poppy flowers in order to honor those that died fighting for their country.
Showing gratitude to those that fight for the country
Veterans and soldiers in our armed forces fight not just for our country and to protect our own people, but they also fight to protect other countries in order to preserve world peace, not just peace in America. This is a selfless act that ultimately gives everyone peace of mind, knowing that should a war be sparked, we’ll have dedicated soldiers who are willing to fight for us on the frontlines.
Showing gratitude by observing Veterans Day is just a small way of showing our gratitude. Even if you just reflect on the history of America or attend a local community barbeque to thank the veterans that once fought for our country, it’s the little things that count and really make us aware of the sacrifice our armed forces take in order to protect the world from danger.
