While many of us are afraid of growing older, it’s now proven that aging leads people to feel more satisfied with their lives.
Growing older might mean your body becomes less and less in shape, however, your mental status may improve as you age.
Growing Old Isn’t the End
“When we think of old age, we often think of decline and loss,” Claudia Haase, a professor of social policy at Northwestern and one of the study’s authors, said in a statement. “But a growing body of research shows that some things actually get better as we age.”
Buffalo University and Northwestern have both performed studies on this phenomena, and the surprising information they found was that older people tend to trust others more, leading to more happiness and well-being. “Trust may benefit well-being because a sense of trust in other people allows us to derive support, comfort, and pleasure from our social relationships,” Haase said. “People who trust more are also happier. Moreover, our study shows that people who trust more are not only happier today, but they also experience increases in happiness over time.”
Maintaining Goals — Don’t Give Up!
Andrea Brandt, Ph.D., says that one of the key things to keep in mind as you age past 50, 60, or 70, is to maintain one’s goals. While many believe that being elderly is like being in the waiting room for death, that is simply not true.
Making sure that life post-retirement is one that is not full of leisure is the key to maintaining happiness. Making sure you keep goals, work objectives, and personal projects at the forefront have been proven to be one of the keys to happiness.
Social Interaction
Social exercise keeps the mind happy and healthy. Going out to meet new people and be stimulated mentally well into being elderly has been shown to improve mental health. Regular social interaction can help someone feel a part of a community and worthwhile. Isolation can lead to feelings of loneliness and despair.
