Obama Forgives Student Loans of 400,000 Disabled Adults

President Obama is prepared to forgive $7.7 billion dollars in student loans for adults permanently disabled.

Announced yesterday, the Department of Education will send letters to nearly 400,000 disabled adults who have the status of “Total and Permanent Disability.” President Obama’s Student Aid Bill of Rights is enacting before his final year as president.

Currently, student debt rises at $2,726 per second. "Americans with disabilities have a right to student loan relief. And we need to make it easier, not harder, for them to receive the benefits they are due," Education Under Secretary Ted Mitchell said. Mitchell mentions one case of a woman whose breast cancer left her permanently disabled, unable to work, and mounting interest on her student loans. It took her seven years until she finally received a disability discharge.

Disabled borrowers will just have to complete an application they receive from the Department of Education, versus applying and proving their disability. "Too many eligible borrowers were falling through the cracks, unaware they were eligible for relief," Mitchell says.

When so much of daily life eschews the special needs of the disabled, it’s good to see definitive action taken so disabled adults can get ahead in life without student debt weighing them down.
